55 Life Lessons of 55 years

20.10.2010.1955

I also learned what I consider to be the two most important lessons in my life, after sharing which I will end this introduction. The first relates to the fact that essentially we are all in control of our lives and selves and no matter how powerful or powerless we may believe we are, there is always something that we can do to make a difference. ‘I will not allow what is not in my control, to prevent me from doing what is in my control.’ The second relates to the fact that everything we do counts and defines us as human beings and becomes our legacy to the world. I ask for the courage to do what is in my control, fearing nobody but my Creator to Whom is my return.  ‘All that we chose to do or chose not to do, defines brand value and character.’

Hope Forum
See with your Heart

Hope Forum

The Hope Forum is a place that the injured from Twitter, Facebook and other social media can come, to detox and cure themselves from the negativity of the world. There’s much good happening in the world that gets no lift. Bad news sells. So we’ll give each other good news for free. And you’ll be automatically chucked out if you post anything negative. The rule for this forum will be that only productive and positive things can be shared. Nothing negative. No criticism of anyone or anything. No praising yourself. Praise others and let others praise you. No pontificating, no proselytizing. No promoting of any particular religion, ideology, politics, shop, product, service or yourself. Only appreciating what others are doing. Let others speak about your work while you do it quietly and sincerely because you believe in it and in yourself. The Hope Forum is something that seeks to change the whole culture of social networking which is simply another name for self-promotion and one-upmanship. We have nothing against any religion, ideology, politics, shop, product, service or you. Just that if you want to promote any of this go somewhere else. This is not the place for it.

How can I become an organizational consultant?
Leadership is a Personal Choice

How can I become an organizational consultant?

Constantly update your knowledge and experience. Admit a mistake if you make it and show how you learned from it. Don’t make excuses or try to shift the blame to someone else. Honesty always pays. Honesty is critical to building credibility which is the lifeblood of consulting. Without credibility you are nothing and will never succeed. “Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten.” Gucci family slogan

An Entrepreneur's Diary

First Breakthrough

Integrity for me has always been an all-or-nothing value. Like the famous quote, ‘You can’t be slightly pregnant,’ I believe that you can’t be slightly dishonest. But of course, you must be willing to pay the price for your convictions. I got a reputation in the market for being completely inflexible on ethical matters. The result of it was that to this day, no client of mine including multinationals like GE, Motorola, Microsoft, and others have ever asked me to sign an NDA (non-disclosure agreement) which is a standard policy with them. That is a badge of honor for me. Many clients also invite me to very sensitive board meetings and policy formulation discussions, knowing full well that their competitors are also my clients. That is because they know how strongly I respect confidentiality and that whatever I participate in, remains with me, and will never go to anyone else.

Every end is a new beginning

My planting story ends on a very happy note which always brings great happiness to my heart. After spending three years in Ambadi, I decided to quit planting and seek my fortune elsewhere. One year later in 1994, I launched by consulting company, Yawar Baig & Associates, in Bangalore and have never looked back. Planting was a very beautiful part of my life which I thoroughly enjoyed. I made great friends who I have remained in close contact with ever since.

As you sow, so you reap

As you sow, so you reap

In my entire career as a general manager, it is a matter of pride for me that I did not give a single paisa as a bribe to any union leader to get what I wanted. I always stood on principle and was able to win every single matter that went for arbitration simply based on good argument and principle in law. I must give a large part of the credit to the people I dealt with in the unions who were honest, upright politicians, ideologically committed to their party line and genuinely interested in doing good for their members. When they saw that I was also of the same bent of mind and did not want to exploit their members but wanted to run a profitable business, they eventually supported me and accepted my solutions. The path was rough, and the ride was bumpy, but we always arrived at our destination safely. The key is to show them how what you are proposing is good for everyone, all around. You cannot fool people. If you do, then your credibility will be permanently destroyed when they find out, which always happens. You must be honest and firm and have all your facts and be prepared to stand by your word.

The meaning of ‘Covenant’

The meaning of ‘Covenant’

Anyone can teach you what to do. But hard taskmasters teach you standards. That is the biggest favor that anyone can do for you. That is what I owe to AVG and Ahmed. Both were the kindest of people off the job, but on the job, it was a different matter. If you did well, not only did they appreciate it, but they made sure that your work was highlighted as yours and they didn’t take credit for it. But if you were careless, or brainless, then you were in for a chewing. Mind you, if you made a well-intentioned mistake in trying to achieve something new or introduce an innovation, your ‘mistake’ was praised. But if the mistake was because you had not applied your mind, were just being plain lazy or stupid, then you learned about that pretty graphically. Tea planting was a way of life. It was not a job. You loved it and thrived. Or you didn’t and left. I loved every moment of it and still do. You can’t be a good planter if planting is merely a job for you. Planting is a lifestyle, which even to this day, I will be very happy to return to, if someone is ready to give me a job, mentoring youngsters who join planting. For me, just to live in the Anamallais is a privilege. Any takers?
